After the complete defeat and destruction of their country, the Germans roll up their sleeves again. They pull their remaining belongings in carts behind them, on the way to a new beginning after all these years of war. Berlin is only a shadow of its former glory. The Americans and Russians have now taken control. The only ones left are the so-called “rubble women” to clear away the debris and make way for something new. But the sky is blue, the sun is shining, and people are hopeful. In Cologne, people listen to the announcements of the new American rulers. How will it continue? The uncertainty is palpable. In Torgau on the Elbe, the American and Russian military meet. They pose together for victory photos and celebrate their shared victory over the tyrannical Nazi Germany. Does history repeat itself over and over again? It is to be hoped that people have learned the lessons of the past and that especially the people of Germany have understood that freedom must always be protected anew.
