By the fall of 1944, and subsequent to solid and substantial Allied advances, America was optimistic that the fiercest combat of the European war was behind them and victory was imminent. But in a last gasp attempt to thwart Allied morale and halt their advance toward Berlin, Germany would subsequently launch major offensives. The draftees, gathered in England for our USO Christmas “Camp Show” on December 5th, 6th and 7th of 1944, largely consisted of fresh-faced, 1944 High School graduates, trained and ready, and awaiting deployment. As German offensives escalated by Christmas of 1944 and during the harsh winter of 1945, large numbers of these young men would be deployed to reinforce front lines decimated by casualties in the siege of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. With limited equipment and provisions (many GIs were not issued winter gear, as the Military had anticipated an end to the war before winter’s arrival), many of them would face extraordinary hardship and suffering in what would be these final major battles of the European War.
