English Subs OVERVIEW Emotion, stylized on-screen as Émotion and known in Japanese as EMOTION 伝説の午後 いつか見たドラキュラ (Emotion: Densetsu no gogo — itsuka mita Dorakyura, roughly translating as Emotion: Legendary Afternoon — The Dracula I Once Saw), is a 1966 Japanese experimental short film written, directed, shot, and edited by Nobuhiko Obayashi. Running approximately 38 to 40 minutes, it is one of Obayashi’s most significant early works and a direct preview of the formal sensibility he would bring to his 1977 feature House. The film blends vampirism, romantic obsession, female friendship, genre parody, avant-garde technique, and surrealist imagery into a work that resists any conventional narrative summary. It opens with a dedication to Roger Vadim’s 1960 horror film Blood and Roses, and the entire enterprise operates in that film’s debt while far exceeding it in formal restlessness. The film was released as a bonus feature on the Criterion Collection’s 2010 Blu-ray and DVD edition of House and is available on the Criterion Channel.
